The Five Cate Sisters

Mr. & Mrs. Cate are the parents of five daughters who can’t seem to sort out the problems created by each of their personality traits, which in turn, leads to dysfunction and enmeshment among them. This leads to chaos and confusion and compels the parents to get involved and try to sort things out with their daughters.

The behavior of any one of the girls triggers a cascade of reactions among the sisters. However, these reactions are predictable and consistent for each of them. Let us observe what happens.

The first sister to react is “Complicate”, and her personality is to make things more complicated or difficult than they really are. Then sister “Replicate” goes about repeating the behavior that started it all. This leads sister “Implicate” to infer and imply fault or blame for the behavior. Seeing all this transpire, sister “Explicate” comes along and attempts to provide a logical explanation of what has happened. Then their timid sister, “Supplicate” begins to beg humbly and earnestly for forgiveness of her sisters’ transgressions.

The situation leads the parents to consider adopting a sixth child, a child who could, they hoped, provide some clarity for their five daughters, Complicate, Replicate, Implicate, Explicate, and Supplicate. So, the parents applied to the agency and were gifted with another girl. Their daughters were excited to have a new sister who seemed to be a little older and much wiser. They eagerly asked their parents her name and were told that her name was “Communicate”, and that her personality strengths would facilitate the exchange of information between them all by using techniques to effectively express ideas and different points of view.

The sisters begin to interact much more constructively, and they were much happier as well. Their parents were relieved to be free of refereeing their daughters and they all enjoyed the reduced stress level in the household. All thanks to the adoption of daughter, “Communicate”.
